Foundation Trust Membership

A personal invitation from our Chairman

I would like to encourage you to become a member of Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.

If you are 12 years of age or older and live anywhere in Essex, whether or not you are currently a patient at the hospital, you are welcome to apply for membership. It is vital to our success as an NHS Foundation Trust hospital that our members reflect the diversity of our local population.  We will be equally pleased to hear from you if you are a near neighbour of the hospital or if you live further afield in Essex.

You might wonder why you should join a Foundation Trust that is not 'your own' local hospital.  There are a number of reasons - mainly that you have an interest in how hospitals deliver healthcare and you want to see them continuing to improve.  More particularly:

  • All hospitals will eventually become NHS Foundation Trusts
  • Membership of more than one will enable you to see, hear and compare how they plan to improve services.  This may cause you to challenge or have increased confidence in your own hospital's plans.

Membership will mean being kept informed and being consulted on the work and plans of the hospital, entitlement to vote in the election of the board of governors and, if you are 16 years or older, to stand for election as a governor. The board of governors will be responsible for reflecting the views of the public, patients, carers and hospital workers to the board of directors.

We are very proud of the reputation of our hospital. We strive to put patients first and provide high quality healthcare services. We believe becoming an NHS Foundation Trust gives us greater freedom to respond more closely to the needs of the local population. I hope you and your family and friends will accept my invitation to join the growing number of public members - currently over 16,000.  The more there are, the stronger their voice becomes.

Please click here to download an application form; alternatively you can call our freephone helpline on 0800 0185202 to apply.

Thank you.
