Outpatients

The dietitians at Southend Hospital welcome patients who are referred by a hospital consultant. If you wish to see a dietitian, please ask your consultant to arrange a referral. If you are not under a consultant at Southend Hospital, you should ask your GP to refer you to the Community Dietitians.

Arranging an appointment

We aim to see all patients within 4-6 weeks of receiving the referral and patients will be contacted to arrange a suitable date/time.  Appointment times vary between 30 minutes and 45 minutes for a new appointment and 15 minutes to 30 minutes for a follow-up appointment.

If you need transport or an interpreter, please make this known when you are contacted to arrange your appointment.

You will then receive a letter confirming the date/time/location and enclosing a food diary for you to complete and bring along to the appointment.    A few days prior to your appointment, you will receive a reminder in the form of a text message.

At your appointment

In most clinics, the nurse will take your weight and possibly height before you see the dietitian.  The dietitian will have access to your medical notes in order to establish your medical history.

We aim to see all patients promptly at their allotted time.  Should we be running slightly behind schedule, please be patient and understand that we may have had to spend extra time with a patient.

If you arrive late for your appointment, we will do our best to see you for the remainder of your appointment time.  If your appointment time has expired, please call the department on 01702 385643 to discuss your options.

Changing your appointment

If you are unable to attend your appointment, please call the department to reschedule.  Patients who fail to attend their appointments without prior notification will be discharged back to their consultant and will need to begin the referral process again.

What happens next

At the end of your consultation, your dietitian will discuss whether a follow-up appointment is required and advise you on how to arrange your next appointment.

Private Appointments

The dietitians at Southend Hospital welcome private patients too.  Just ask your consultant or GP to send through a referral and we will contact you to arrange an appointment.  Private appointments are held weekdays outside of normal departmental working hours.
