Cardiology & respiratory medicine

The diagnosis and treatment for conditions of the heart and lungs.

Our services include:

  • Cardiac care unit - treating people who have suffered from a heart attack, patients with pacemakers and problems with irregular heart rhythm.
  • Heart and chest clinic - a specialist department for outpatients which performs a wide range of tests for people with heart and lung conditions.
  • Rapid access chest pain - a GP referral-only service for men over 30 and women over 40, who have no previous cardiac history and have had chest pain in the last eight weeks

Cardiology

Our cardiology team comprises three consultant cardiologists supported by a team of specialist doctors and nurses, as well as nursing, clerical and management staff. We aim to provide a quality service to patients with a variety of cardiac conditions, and their carers.

The Gordon Hopkins ward provides inpatient care for those patients transferred from the Coronary Care Unit (Sita Lumsden ward) and those patients with a more stable cardiac condition.  A number of cardiology clinics are located within the hospital:

  • General cardiology clinics and diagnostic testing takes place in the in the heart and chest department on the first floor of the Prittlewell Building. The department is open from 08.30 to 17.00.
  • Arrhythmia (atrial fibrillation) and heart failure clinics are held in the Cardiac and Medical Day Stay Unit, located on the ground floor of the Prittlewell Building. The department is open from 08.30 to 17.00.
  • Advanced echocardiography (including trans-oesophageal echocardiography, contrast studies and stress echocardiograms) are held in our echocardiography department, located on the ground floor of the Prittlewell Building. The department is open from 08.30 to 17.00.
  • Invasive diagnostic procedures (including pacemaker insertions) are performed in the cardiac catheter laboratory located in the X-Ray department on the first floor of the Prittlewell Building, adjacent to the heart and chest department.
  • Nuclear cardiology studies are performed in the nuclear medicine department, located on the ground floor of the Prittlewell Building. The department is open from 08.30 to 17.00.
  • CT scan-based calcium scoring and angiograms are performed in the CT scan suite, located on the ground floor of the Prittlewell Building. The department is open from 08.30 to 17.00.

Respiratory medicine

The diagnosis and management of all the common respiratory disorders.These include COPD, (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease), asthma, cystic fibrosis, interstitial lung disease, lung cancer, mesothelioma, TB, bronchiectasis, sleep and ventilatory disorders, pulmonary vascular disease and pleural (lung) disease. Our sleep apnoea service is one of the largest in theUKand we have a 'hospital at home' scheme for our COPD patients.

FADS

FADS is a support group run by medical professional and volunteers and is dedicated to providing support and reassurance to people with implanted cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs). The group is run by two dedicated cardiac physiologists and meets every four months. Each meeting covers a different topic relating to ICDs and guest speakers may also appear.

PACERS

PACERS is a support group run by medical professional and volunteers and is dedicated to providing support and reassurance to people with pacemakers. The group is run by two dedicated cardiac physiologists and meets every four months. Each meeting covers a different topic relating to ICDs and guest speakers may also appear.
