Diabetes & endocrine

Diabetes, endocrinology and metabolism are based in the diabetes centre. Clinical services are provided by Dr James Ahlquist, Dr Ayesha Siddiqui, Dr Ali Rathore and Dr Indrani Chakraborti. Diabetes services are supported by our diabetes specialist nurses Sr Michelle Purchese, Sr Zoe Cooper and Sr Fiona Golding.

Our diabetes team includes two hospital-based diabetes specialist nurses who support those with pre-existing or newly diagnosed diabetes.

The department provides specialist inpatient care for new presentations of type 1, type 2 or secondary diabetes, hyperglycaemic and hypoglycaemic emergencies and comprehensive care for the complications of diabetes alongside other specialist teams.

Outpatient clinics provide routine care for patients with type 1, type 2 and secondary diabetes, a diagnostic assessment for possible familial diabetes mellitus (MODY or mitochondrial diabetes), managment of obesity and diabetes, and specific review of the control of macrovascular and microvascular risk factors.

We work closely with the department of dietetics, running a weekly clinic together to consider overall metabolic control in diabetes, dyslipidaemia, hypertension and renal disease.  Our specialist nurses and dieticians run carbohydrate counting courses and supervise a local DAFNE programme for patients on intensive insulin regimes. Care of the diabetic foot is provided alongside our vascular surgeons, Mr Salter and Mr Brown, and the wound care team.

We run specialist clinics to manage diabetes mellitus in pregnancy together with Miss Deborah Jennings, transitional care of the adolescent with Dr Fathel Rahman Awadalla and diabetic nephropathy with Dr Patrick Harnett. Pre-pregnancy counselling for diabetic patients is provided alongside our specialist diabetes midwife.
