Information for researchers

All individuals wishing to carry out research that involves Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, be it access to our premises, our staff or our patients, must check if they require a form of contractual cover from the Trust prior to commencing any research.

The Trust works in full accordance with the national Research in the NHS HR Good Practice Resource Pack, also known as The Research Passport Scheme. This provides guidance and good practice standards for the NHS and Higher Education Institutions ensuring consistency in issuing and recognising NHS honorary research contracts; reducing bureaucracy and delays in research commencing.

Detailed advice can be found on the National Institute for Health Research Research Passport website:https://www.nihr.ac.uk/about-us/CCF/policy-and-standards/research-passports.htm

I am already employed by Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

If Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is your substantive employer then you are already eligible to carry out research within the Trust provided your research study has received the necessary Research Ethics Committee and Health Research Authority approvals to commence. Make sure the research office has an up to date copy of your r esearch cv and an up to date Good Clinical Practice certificate.

If you wish to support a research study at another NHS Trust or in primary care, please contact the research office and we will guide you on the forms you need to complete and where to send them to ensure a timely permission.

I am an academic who holds an Honorary Clinical Contract with Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

If you have an honorary clinical contract with the Trust, then you are already eligible to carry out research within the hospital, provided it has received the necessary Research Ethics Committee and Health Research Authority approvals to commence. Make sure the research office has an up to date copy of your  Research cv and an up to date Good Clinical Practice certificate.

I am employed by the NHS, but not at Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

If you are not employed by Southend University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust and do not hold an honorary clinical contract with us, then you need to approach the R&D office to enquire about arranging for the issuing of an NHS to NHS Letter of Access. In short, please send a completed  NHS to NHS confirmation of pre-employment checks form to the research office along with an up to date copy of your r esearch cv and an up to date Good Clinical Practice certificate.

I am employed (or a student) at a University or another Higher Education Institute

Individuals whose substantive employer is a university (including students) need to approach the R&D office to enquire about the issuing of either a Non-NHS Letter of Access or an Honorary Research Contract. Which permission you will require depends on the role you will be conducting as part of the research and level of interaction you will have with our patients, their samples and data. In short, please send a completed (or previously validated) Research Passport form to the research office along with an up to date copy of your r esearch cv and an up to date Good Clinical Practice certificate and the required other supporting evidence (ie criminal records check, occupational health check).
